Don Henninger has been a top media executive and business leader in Phoenix for 30 years. His experience includes serving as the chief executive of the Southwest’s largest business publication, overseeing its P&L, strategy, sales, audience development, staff and content development.
During his 17 years at the Phoenix Business Journal, he recorded sustained revenue and margin growth for the paper throughout his tenure. He led the paper to strong expansion in audience development on the digital, print and event platforms. He oversaw a transformation of the newsroom as he re-positioned the news team to be a digital-first operation. And through his leadership, the paper maintained a healthy culture, with little turnover through his 17 years.
He developed and implemented innovative strategies to ensure the paper had a strong future in an ever-changing and challenging publishing environment.
Before the PBJ, he had a 13-year career in daily newspapers, during which he rose to the position of Managing Editor of The Arizona Republic, in charge of the daily operations at one of the nation’s largest newsrooms. Along the journey, he served in a variety of roles, including sports and business editor, and he was an award-winning sports columnist.
He is a recognized community leader, having served on dozens of not-for-profit business and social service organizations, ranging from the United Way to the Red Cross to the Phoenix, Scottsdale and Arizona chambers of commerce.
Through those years he built a deep source of relationships and contacts in virtually every segment of the region’s economy. These are the skills and experience he now brings to Board Developer.
